Introduction to the world of SUP in Artemis
Stand Up Paddle (SUP) is perhaps the most accessible and refreshing activity one can enjoy in the waters of Artemis. Whether you are looking for a relaxing ride in the South Euboean Gulf during sunset, or you desire an intense workout to improve your balance and physical condition, SUP is the ideal sport. However, the quality of your experience depends directly on the SUP equipment you choose. At the Nautical Club of Artemis Spata (NOAS), we have seen many beginners get discouraged because they started with the wrong equipment. In this guide, we will analyze the basic tools you need to start with safety and confidence.
Choosing the ideal SUP board
The board is the center of your experience. For beginners, the main priority is stability. Inflatable boards (iSUP) are extremely popular for reasons of transport and durability, as they are forgiving of mistakes when bumping into the shallow waters of our beach. For a beginner, an "all-around" type board with great width and significant volume is the ideal choice. The width provides the necessary platform to stand with confidence, while its shape allows for easy paddling in both calm and slightly wavy waters. At NOAS, we always emphasize that the choice of board should be made based on the rider's body weight and their level of experience.
The paddle: The extension of your body
Many underestimate the importance of the paddle, thinking that any stick can do the job. In reality, the correct length and weight of the paddle determine the efficiency of your rowing. A paddle that is too long or too short will tire you out quickly and affect your technique. For beginners, adjustable aluminum or carbon-hybrid paddles are the best solution. You can adjust the length according to your height (usually 15-20 centimeters above your head). Correct holding technique and the right angle of the blade are elements we teach in our academy, as the movement starts from the core of the body and not just from the arms.
The leash: Your guardian angel
If there is one piece of equipment you should never neglect, it is the leash (safety strap). The leash connects your leg to the board, ensuring that, in case of a fall, the board will not drift away from you due to the wind or current. In the waters of the South Euboean Gulf, where winds can change quickly, the leash is essential for your safety. We recommend the "coil" leash, which stays coiled on the board and does not get tangled in your legs during rowing, offering freedom of movement.
Safety and equipment beyond the basics
Beyond the board, the paddle, and the leash, there are some accessories that upgrade safety. A life jacket (PFD - Personal Flotation Device) is mandatory for every beginner, regardless of how well they swim. Also, suitable clothing according to the season, such as a thin neoprene suit or lycra with UV protection, will protect you from the cold and the sun. At NOAS, we place great emphasis on understanding the weather before we go out on the water. Reading the wind and knowing local conditions is part of the training we offer. For those who want to delve into weather conditions, our guide on the Beaufort scale is an excellent starting point.
