The sport

What is the Optimist?

The Optimist is the most widespread sailing training dinghy for children worldwide. It is small, stable and designed so a child can handle it alone in complete safety — which is why it is the first boat of almost every sailing champion.

Training takes place in the sheltered bay of Artemida, always under the supervision of the coaches and accompanied by a support boat. Children start by getting familiar with the water and the boat, gradually learn the sails, the tiller and the wind, and soon make their first independent "voyages".

For a child, the Optimist is above all an experience of freedom: they learn to command their own boat, make decisions and work with the team — while playing and having fun at sea.

In NOAS's athletic programme, the Optimist is the base of the pyramid: from the beginners' academies to the racing team that earns distinctions at national regattas, and then the natural transition to ILCA or windsurfing.
