The History of NOAS

NOAS Sailing Club, the Nautical Athletic Club of Artemida-Spata based at Limeniskos Artemidas, is one of the historic centres of water sports in East Attica. From 1972 to the present day, the club has linked its journey with the sea of Artemida, with sailing, maritime education, sport, and the development of young people through values such as discipline, cooperation, perseverance and respect for the marine environment.

NOAS Sailing Club: over 50 years of sailing, maritime education and sport in East Attica.

The founding of NOAS in 1972

The founding of NOAS in 1972 answered a genuine need of the area: to give structure to the relationship between the children, young people and families of Artemida and Spata and the sea. In a place whose everyday life had always been tied to the Euboean Gulf, the club was created as a meeting point for people who loved the sea and believed that water sports could become a way of life, education and growth.

The early years: laying the foundations of maritime education

In its first years of operation, NOAS laid the foundations of maritime education in the area. With a constant presence at Limeniskos Artemidas, it began forming training groups, gathering children around sailing and building a community of parents, athletes, coaches and volunteers. Its activity was never limited to the competitive side of the sport. From the very beginning, its role was deeper: to bring young people close to the sea with safety, knowledge and respect.

The evolution: Optimist, ILCA, Techno 293 and Windsurfing

Over the years, NOAS grew into a well-organised sailing club with a presence in the core dinghy classes, such as Optimist and ILCA/Laser, while in more recent times its activity expanded into disciplines such as the Techno 293 and windsurfing. Through its academies, many children took their first steps at sea, learned to handle a boat, to read the wind, to work with their coach and fellow athletes, and to build self-confidence through personal effort.

Generations of athletes and the meaning of continuity

The history of NOAS is closely tied to the idea of continuity. Generations of athletes have passed through the club's facilities — some to experience sailing as a life lesson, others to pursue a competitive career. For Artemida and Spata, the club has been a place of sport, community and creativity, where children learned not only to compete, but also to respect nature, their fellow athletes, their coach, their equipment and themselves.

Facilities and training

A significant part of NOAS's journey has been the constant effort to improve its facilities. Upgrading the fleet, strengthening the boats, creating training spaces and organising the coaching process enabled the club to offer its athletes a more complete education. The creation of a theory classroom marked another milestone in the club's development, since sailing is not only a practical skill but also knowledge: understanding the wind, the rules, strategy, safety and seamanship.

Competitive identity and distinctions

In the modern era, NOAS has further strengthened its competitive identity. Its presence at regional, national and international regattas has produced athletes with notable distinctions and performances. Successes in classes such as ILCA and Techno 293 show that the club is not merely a sailing school, but also a place of high-level athletic development. Through the efforts of athletes, coaches and families, NOAS has left its mark on Greek sailing.

The club's social role

At the same time, the club has continued to serve its social role. Children's programmes, summer activities, young children's first contact with the sea, and introductions to sailing, swimming, SUP and other water activities have reinforced NOAS's position as a living cell of the local community. For many families of Artemida, Spata and the wider East Attica, the club has been — and remains — their children's first organised contact with water sports.

A steady mission since 1972

From 1972 to today, NOAS has maintained a steady mission: to keep the area's relationship with the sea alive and to offer young people a safe, healthy and creative sporting environment. Its history is the history of people who volunteered their work, coaches who guided, parents who supported, and athletes who strove, competed and represented the club with pride.

NOAS today

Today, NOAS Sailing Club continues its journey as an important sailing institution of East Attica. With deep roots in the past, an active presence in the present and a vision for the future, NOAS remains a club that unites Artemida, Spata and the Euboean Gulf with the sea, education, sport and the values born of sailing.
