Introduction: The importance of planning in learning to sail
Sailing is not just a sport; it is a way of life that cultivates character, discipline, and a love for the marine environment. At the Nautical Club of Artemis-Spata (NOAS), we fully understand the concerns of parents regarding scheduling for their children. How often should a child train to progress? How can sports be combined with school obligations? These are the questions you ask us daily, and to which we will provide detailed answers.
The philosophy of frequency at NOAS
Sailing in the South Euboean Gulf requires consistency. For an athlete in their early steps, contact with the sea must be steady. Training at our Academy is designed to provide maximum efficiency without exhausting the child. Our sessions involve not only technical training on the boat but also theoretical preparation, learning meteorology, and understanding safety at sea.
Weekly schedule: What to expect
The training schedule is formed based on the age group and level of experience. Typically, for beginners in the Optimist category, two to three sessions per week are recommended. This frequency is considered ideal for keeping muscle memory active without creating a sense of pressure. Our training sessions include:
- Weekends: They are the core of our education as we take advantage of daylight and the prevailing weather conditions.
- Weekdays: For advanced groups or during periods of preparation for regattas, we add afternoon sessions.
The nature of sailing in Artemis teaches us that we are always students of nature. If the weather does not allow us to take the boats out, training is moved to the club's facilities for theoretical analysis and equipment maintenance.
Adaptability and individual progress
Not all children progress at the same pace. Some children need more time on the water to feel confident, while others possess an innate aptitude for strategy. At NOAS, our secretariat, in consultation with the coaching staff, can guide you regarding the customization of the program. Whether it concerns windsurfing or the classic Optimist school, our goal is to maintain the interest and joy of the game.
How to manage the schedule with school
One of the advantages of our club in Artemis is flexibility. We understand that school obligations, private tutoring, and family needs are a priority. We suggest that parents talk to our coaches to find the balance that allows the child to enjoy the sport without feeling that it is 'just another lesson' in their busy schedule. Consistency, even with fewer hours, is much more effective than occasional and intense involvement.
