The dawn of navigation: The roots of the Greeks
The history of sailing in the Greek region begins in prehistoric times. The first inhabitants of the Aegean, realizing the power of the wind, turned simple boats into vessels capable of crossing the open sea. During classical antiquity, the trireme became the symbol of Greek maritime supremacy. Although rowing was the primary mode of propulsion in battle, sails were widely used for long voyages, taking advantage of the Etesian winds (meltemia) and local breezes, similar to those we encounter today in the South Euboean Gulf.
The evolution of the sporting character
The transition from commercial and war ships to recreational and racing sailboats is a fascinating chapter. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the creation of the first nautical clubs in Greece laid the foundations for organized sailing. Sports on the water became the means to cultivate a love for adventure and discipline, values that we strive to pass on to the students of our academy today.

The area of Artemida and the waters of the South Euboean Gulf offer the ideal terrain for learning to sail. The geographical location of NOAS allows us to take advantage of the specific wind intensity conditions, making our area one of the most up-and-coming sailing destinations in Attica. Learning in Optimist boats, our children's first 'school', is the continuation of a maritime tradition that started from ancient ports and reaches up to modern Olympic classes.

When a student steps onto their boat, they are not just doing a sport. They connect with all those sailors who read the horizon centuries ago.
