Introduction: Preparation Before Hitting the Water
Getting involved in sailing at the Nautical Athletic Club of Artemis and Spata (NOAS) is a unique experience for every child. The South Euboean Gulf, with its specific conditions and open waters, offers the ideal field for learning Optimist, windsurfing, or SUP. However, for this experience to be enjoyable, safe, and effective, proper preparation of equipment before every training session is essential.
Basic Equipment for Training
The first and most important item every athlete must have is a life jacket. At NOAS, safety comes first, and no child enters the water without one. Additionally, sailing shoes or special water booties are necessary for protection against slippery surfaces on the boat and to avoid injuries. Clothing should be suitable for water activities, using quick-drying materials (such as lycra), while avoiding cotton which retains moisture.
The Importance of Sun and Cold Protection
Weather conditions in Artemis can change quickly. Even on sunny days, the reflection of the sun on the water intensifies exposure to radiation. A hat with a chin strap, high-protection sunscreen, and sunglasses with a strap are items that should always accompany the child. Conversely, during months with lower temperatures, a wetsuit or a windbreaker is essential to keep body temperature at a stable level.
What the "Sailor's Backpack" Should Contain
Each of our athletes should have a waterproof backpack containing: a change of dry clothes, a towel, a water bottle for hydration, and perhaps a light snack. Hydration during training is critical, especially on days with strong winds where physical exertion is greater.
Organization and Autonomy
We encourage our children at NOAS to prepare their equipment themselves. This process cultivates a sense of responsibility and organization, values that accompany our athletes in every aspect of their lives. Knowing what is needed for training is the first step toward becoming a well-rounded sailor.
Communication and Trials
If you have questions regarding the equipment recommended for your child's level or would like to schedule a visit to our facilities in Artemis, our club's secretariat is at your disposal for any clarification. We look forward to seeing you at NOAS to discover the magic of sailing in the South Euboean Gulf together.
