From fear to victory: The power of self-confidence

Every one of our athletes started with a fear — the sea, the wind, the dark. See how they overcame it.

"I want to go back," said 8-year-old Maria on her first day in the Optimist class. The wind was at 8 Beaufort, the waves small but alarming for a child. Her coach, Thanasis, did not pressure her. He let her sit in the boat at the edge of the dock, to feel the sun, to hear the water.

The following week, Maria was in the water. In two months, she was competing. In a year, she won her first medal.

Maria's story is not unique. Every year, dozens of children come to NOAS with hesitation, with fear, with doubt. And every year, we see the same thing: fear recedes, self-confidence grows, and their smiles become broader.

Sailing is the only sport that places a child face-to-face with nature entirely alone. You cannot hide from the wind. You cannot pretend you did not see the wave. And when a child manages to handle them — when they return to the harbor with their own hands — they know they can do anything.

This self-confidence does not stay at sea. They take it to school, into their relationships, and through life. And that is the gift we want to give to every child.
