Beach start: The first big step for a windsurfer

The magic of windsurfing in the South Euboean Gulf

Windsurfing is not just a sport. It is a continuous conversation with the wind, a choreography of balance on the waves, and a way to feel absolute freedom. At the Artemis Nautical Club (NOAS), we have the privilege of being located in one of the most gifted spots in Attica. The waters of the South Euboean Gulf offer the ideal conditions for our young athletes, whether they are just taking their first steps or preparing for the next stage of their athletic journey.

What is the Beach Start and why is it critical?

The beach start is the first essential technique that turns a beginner into an independent windsurfer. As long as athletes are in the shallows, using the uphaul to lift the sail, they remain dependent on the equipment. The beach start is the technique that allows the athlete to begin their journey directly from the shore, with the sail already in the sailing position.

Its importance is immense, as it frees the child from the strenuous process of pulling the sail up from the water, allowing them to start quickly, conserve their energy, and, most importantly, gain confidence in the sea.

The technique behind the Beach Start

For the athletes of the NOAS Techno 293 class, learning the beach start is a milestone. It requires coordination, proper body positioning, and an understanding of wind direction. The windsurfer positions the board so that it is perpendicular to the wind, with the sail remaining on the side the wind is blowing (downwind). With a decisive movement, the sail fills with wind and the athlete climbs onto the board while it is already in motion.

At our club, training happens gradually. Our coaches guide young athletes to understand the physics behind the wind's power on the sail, ensuring that the transition from uphaul to beach start is done safely and with control.

Techno 293: The stepping stone to the top

The Techno 293 class is the global standard for learning windsurfing. It is the category where children learn the basic principles of sailing, strategy, and sportsmanship. For NOAS athletes, getting involved with the Techno 293 does not stop at learning techniques like the beach start. It is a whole preparation philosophy.

Many of our athletes view the Techno 293 as the necessary stage before the Olympic path. The iQFOiL, the new Olympic class, requires a robust foundation of technical knowledge built at this very level. The ability to perfectly execute a beach start, a jibe, or a tack is the foundation upon which the champion who will later 'fly' over the water on their iQFOiL hydrofoils will be built.
